Alstom case study

As one of the UK’s leading train operators, CrossCountry knows that first impressions matter. The external cleanliness of its Voyager fleet plays a vital role in shaping customer perceptions, reinforcing brand reputation, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. In collaboration with global train manufacturer Alstom and chemical specialists Arrow Solutions, CrossCountry embarked on an ambitious deep cleaning programme – utilising Thickened Oxalwash to bring a visibly enhanced finish to their fleet.
The Challenge
CrossCountry faced a persistent issue common in the rail sector: ingrained dirt, iron deposits and rust staining that daily wash programmes couldn’t shift. Standard cleaning routines – although sufficient for surface-level grime – left behind harder-to-clean areas like door buttons, vestibule ends and sole bars.
There was also a growing emphasis on safety and environmental considerations. Any new product introduced to a high-throughput depot like Alstom’s Central Rivers facility would need to be not only effective, but safe for staff, rolling stock and infrastructure.
Arrow Solutions recognised these demands and committed to delivering a powerful yet safe alternative. Multiple stakeholders – including health and safety officers, production teams and CrossCountry fleet managers – were engaged to ensure a tailored, responsible approach.

The solution
The result was a 20-hour bodyside deep clean across 57 Voyager trains, using Arrow’s Thickened Oxalwash. This thickened formulation enhanced cling, allowing longer contact times on vertical and awkward surfaces where ferrous staining was most pronounced.
The results were striking:
- Significantly cleaner finishes, particularly in previously problematic areas
- Improved re-cleanability, with trains easier to maintain post-treatment
- Increased pride and morale among on-site cleaning teams, who could visibly see the difference
- Enhanced brand image, with cleaner trains delivering a more professional and welcoming appearance for passengers
“Significant improvement in the appearance of harder to clean areas and removal of ingrained dirt along the bodyside.”
Jon Williams, CrossCountry’s Fleet and Contract Manager
